VMA Poll: Michael Jackson King of MTV Awards

Michael Jackson, Britney and Madonna top MTV VMAs viewer poll

Aug. 26, 2011 -- intro:

Was it Lady Gaga in a meat dress accepting a Moonman trophy from Cher?

Madonna's on-stage smooch with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera?

Or the moment when Kanye West stole the microphone from Taylor Swift to tell the world Beyonce should have won instead?

MTV left it to the viewers to decide their all-time favorite MTV Video Music Awards moments from the show's past 28 years.

Some 15 million people voted in the poll and, today, MTV gave "Good Morning America" an exclusive sneak peek at the results.

The 2011 show will air live from Los Angeles Sunday at 9 p.m. with a lineup that includes Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Adele, in her first ever VMA performance, and pop heavyweights Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj battling it out to take home the Moonman

Sunday's show will also include a special tribute for VMA favorite Britney Spears, to be delivered by Madonna.

"I guarantee you there will be a surprise moment," MTV host Sway told "GMA." "I guarantee you will watch this show with your mouth wide open."

But will any of the moments top these top nine moments chosen by MTV viewers? Watch "GMA" on Monday and check back here to find out!

quicklist: 1title: Most Iconic VMA Performancetext: For MTV voters, it was all about the King of Pop. Voters singled out Michael Jackson as their "Most Iconic" for the medley of songs he sang in 1995. Jackson singing and dancing to "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Scream," "Beat It" and "Smooth Criminal" picked up 57 percent of the vote, beating the likes of Madonna with "Like a Virgin" in 1984 and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" from 2009.media:14387219

quicklist: 2title: Wildest VMA Outfit Evertext: The flashy purple pantsuit worn by rapper Lil Kim in 1999 beat out even Lady Gaga's meat dress and a cleavage-defying dress worn by JLo to take the wildest outfit title. Lil Kim's ensemble, which left one breast exposed except for a pasty over her nipple, was picked by 39 percent of voters as the wildest outfit ever worn to the VMAs, also beating Britney Spear's black leather biker ensemble from 2002.media: 14387297

quicklist:3title: Most Outrageous VMA Momenttext: It was the kiss heard around the world in 2003 when Madonna leaned in for a quick smooch with Christina Aguilera and then an even-steamier kiss with Spears during a show opening, wedding-themed performance of Madonna's "Like a Virgin." Spears herself told MTV News that her favorite VMA memory was that infamous lip-lock with Madonna. "My greatest experience — probably being with Madonna," she told the network. "The kiss was amazing. ... Being onstage with someone of that caliber is just iconic." Spears is up for two Moonmen at the 2011 VMAs, including Best Pop Video and Best Choreography.

quicklist: 5title: Best VMA Hip-Hop Performancetext: Eminem, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg onstage together was all it took for them to walk away with the Hip-Hop trophy. The trio's performance of "My Name Is," "Guilty Conscience" and "Nuthin' But a G Thang" in 1999 beat out everything from a 1980s performance by Run DMC and Aerosmith to Outkast, the Beastie Boys and Jay-Z with Alicia Keys.media:14387319

quicklist: 6title: Best VMA Pop Performancetext: Fittingly, viewers gave the Best Pop Performance crown to the artist known as the "King of Pop." Michael Jackson, who died in June 2009 from a drug overdose, got the nod for best pop performance with the same medley of hits that won him the "Most Iconic Performance" crown from viewers. Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, TLC and even his own sister, Janet Jackson, who performed a tribute to Michael the year he died, all came in far behind the "King of Pop" in this category too.media:14387219

At The Disco's "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" pulled a surprise, beating videos from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Beyonce to win the Best VMA Video of the 2000s. The single from their 2006 debut album also won the Las Vegas band an MTV Video of the Year award that same year, and launched them into a headlining tour.media: 14387254

quicklist: 8title: Best Video of the Year Winner of the 1990stext: The '90s were all about groups and bands so it's fitting that the all-female trio TLC won for their video for "Waterfalls." Who can forget the images, after all, of T-Boz, Chili and Left Eye immersed in water, moving their arms in their signature dance move to the 1995 hit single from their second album "CrazySexyCool."media:14387230

quicklist:9title:Best Video of the Year Winner of the 1980stext: Videos were just hitting the music scene in the 1980s and no one did it better, according to MTV viewers, than INXS with their "I Need You Tonight" hit.media:14387307
