Melissa McCarthy wants to play Ursula in new 'Little Mermaid': 'It seems like it will be an awfully fun thing to do'
"I'd love if Disney gave me a little ringy-dingy," she said.
After recent reports surfaced that Melissa McCarthy will play Ursula in Disney's live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," the actress is finally addressing the speculation.
During an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Monday night, the actress seemed to feign ignorance when asked about the role by Kimmel, saying, "What's that? Disney? ... I hadn't heard about that. It seems like it will be an awfully fun thing to do."
"I'd love if Disney gave me a little ringy-dingy. We'll see," she added, winking to the crowd.
McCarthy said the opportunity to play the villain "would be very wonderful."
The actress also said she feels like "everybody" has seen the classic film.
"I was a nanny when that first came out and one of the little girls I was watching -- we watched it every single night for about a year and a half ... I know it, I know it to my core, and I weirdly still love it," she noted.
Another artist, Lizzo, has also openly expressed her interest in the role. "I'M URSULA. PERIOD. @Disney," she posted alongside a video dressed as the character in November 2018.
She retweeted the video after reports of McCarthy taking on the role surfaced.
