How to make a simple, tasty pizza in a cake pan

Cookbook author Anna Gass shared this twist on a savory favorite.

Chef, recipe tester and cookbook author Anna Gass joined "Good Morning America" to share her riff on regular pizza.

Gass' pizza "cake" combines two fluffy layers of pizza bread; sandwiches mozzarella cheese with meat; adds sauce the way you would frost a cake; and its toppings, including oregano and parmesan cheese, create savory sprinkles.

Pizza 'Cake'

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups lukewarm whole milk
1 package active ‘instant’ dry yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 eggs
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon kosher salt

Filling:
1 pound shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 pound deli ham, diced

Frosting and sprinkles:
1 1/2 cup marinara sauce
1 cup Parmigiano cheese, divided
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large measuring cup, warm the milk and add the yeast and sugar. Allow to sit for 5 minutes to bloom.

While yeast is blooming, add the flour to a large bowl.

Create a well and add eggs, oil and salt.

Begin to beat the eggs and slowly add in the yeasted milk. Mix until all is fully combined. You will not have a pizza dough, you will have a pizza batter.

Line and spray a 9x13-inch pan. Pour a little less than half the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Add the filling evenly over the batter. Pour the rest of the batter on top and spread over the filling.

Add the marinara sauce in 8 even dollops to the top and spread carefully. Sprinkle oregano and half of the Parmigiano cheese. Drizzle with the extra-virgin olive oil.

Bake for 45 minutes until dough rises and starts to brown.

Remove from the oven, drizzle with the rest of the cheese and another bit of olive oil, and bake for another 15 minutes.

Serve immediately.
