Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer

May 6, 2006 — -- Today members of the American Academy of Dermatology are trying to set a Guinness World Record for the most people screened for skin cancer in a single day.

If you can't make it out to one of the 200 sites around the country where they are conducting the screenings, you can still try to prevent skin cancer by following these three simple tips from Dr. Darrell Rigel, a dermatologist and professor at New York University.

Protect yourself with sunscreen and hats -- they dramatically lower your chance for skin cancer.

Be sun smart -- don't just bake in the sun for the sake of it. There's no reason for that.

If you see some change in your skin, have it looked at immediately by your doctor. Early prognosis is huge.
