Checklist: Take Control of Your Financial Future

Feb. 5, 2007 — -- Mellody Hobson, "Good Morning America's" financial contributor, recently reviewed ways women can take control of their financial futures. Below is a checklist of her tips that you can save and print to help you take charge.

Find out about your family's assets. What are they? Where are they? Be aware of the big financial picture and stay informed about your family's finances.

Be especially aware of activity on joint accounts. How much do you owe? What is the family's overall income and what are its expenditures?

Establish and maintain your own credit history with a credit card in your name only. Do the same with a personal bank account.

If you're taking time off from a job, make sure you leave on good terms and maintain your professional connections. Consider enrolling in classes to keep your skills current and sharp.

Set up a spousal IRA account and maximize your contributions to the best of your ability.

If you are working, enroll in your company's 401(k) plan. Even if you can't afford to contribute the maximum, take full advantage of company matching programs, as this translates to free money for your retirement.
