Tips: Help Your Teenager Drive Safely
Auto accidents are the leading cause of death for American teenagers.
Dec. 24, 2009— -- More than 5,000 teenagers, ages 16 to 20 are killed in car crashes each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They are the leading cause of death for American teenagers.
Parents should talk to their teenage drivers "early and often" about traffic safety, and parents should always set a good example when they are behind the wheel, according to the NHTSA.
To help teenagers understand the rules parents set for them and the consequences of breaking those rules, NHTSA suggests drawing up contracts with teenagers that include the following points:
Absolutely no alcohol.
Always use a seat belt.
No talking on the cell phone or texting while driving.
Set a curfew.
No more than one passenger at all times.
