Dress Your Man at Any Age

Sept. 16, 2005 — -- Is the man in your life dressing "too young" for his age? Maybe he still wears his lucky tube socks from his junior year in high school? Maybe his fashion sense is just plain frightening?

"GMA" and GQ magazine style editor Adam Rapoport are coming to the rescue with tips on how to dress your man with flair:

20-Something Style: This look puts a new twist on tradition. The key is that your guy doesn't look like he's been forced to put on a suit, like he's going to grandma's house.

For the office, try a suit with a young cut, which means it's a bit slimmer. To make it cool, you can twist it by wearing a colorful sweater, the collar undone, and a skinny tie.

For a 20-something weekend look, get trendy, because this is the only time you can get away with it. If you're wearing a skull cap to hide the fact you're balding, you're too old to be trendy.

30-Something Style: The 30-something look is a transition from trendy to stylish.

The weekend look can still be stylish, just don't resort to retro concert T-shirts and baggy pants, channeling the days when you had two roommates. A 30-something guy should be making enough money to afford a place to live and decent clothes. He can still have a foot in the trends of his 20s, but he has to have a foot in the elegance of his 40s.

Go with classic American attire -- a corduroy jacket with khakis that fit well and a pair of sneakers. This is a point in a guy's life when he should look like he cares about his clothes. He's got to learn about labels.

40-Something Style: At this point in your man's life, hopefully he can afford some classic, well-made pieces. But remember: a good suit doesn't have to break the bank. It has to fit him well.

Invest in a well-made suit with muted colors and simple lines for a masculine look. The shirt should be classic as well -- no crazy patterns. To personalize the style, keep the collar open and remember that good dress shoes are a must.

Style doesn't stop at 40. You can't go wrong with a turtleneck in the right size. An overcoat is good for work and weekends. Look for one that is sharply cut and form-fitting, not huge.
