Spend Money on the Vacation, Not Getting There

May 3, 2006 — -- Summer is the season for travel. People want to take the kids on a vacation or just hit the beach for the weekend, but getting away can cost a bundle.

Take heart, though, because there are ways to save and cut corners.

Go directly to the airline for the best fares.

Watch for hidden costs.

For example: One airline charges for aisle seats. Some charge for skycap service.

Check out flights into smaller regional airports instead of major hubs.

For example: If you are going to Chicago, try flying into Midway instead of O'Hare or fly into Long Beach instead of Los Angeles.

Pack lightly.

Airlines used to allow people to bring 70 pounds of luggage. Now they allow their passengers to bring only 50 pounds each before getting charged extra.

Bring your own food, and buy meals and snacks away from the airport as far as you possibly can.
