It's Official: Moomers Makes 'Best' Ice Cream

May 28, 2008 -- "Good Morning America" crisscrossed the country in search of the best ice cream, and after 50,000 votes, the winner is in.

Moomers Homemade Ice Cream in Traverse City, Mich., has been named America's Best Scoops.

"Moomers exemplifies small-town America," said Lisa Vidor, a loyal customer who nominated Moomers for the contest, adding that the shop "makes the best ice cream in the world!"

From cow to cone, Moomers ice cream covers every step of the ice cream-making process. Set on the family farm of the Plummer family, Moomers is known throughout northern Michigan for its hospitality and for its fresh ingredients harvested from the "Cherry Capital of the World."

The store's signature flavor is Cherries Moobilee, a rich mix of black cherry-flavored ice cream with chunks of black and red cherries, chocolate fudge swirl and chunks of homemade brownies.

It's a family affair for the Plummer family: Parents Bob and Nancy Plummer own the ice cream shop, and the store is managed by son Jon.

Nancy left her job as a teacher to start the family's ice cream shop, even building the store with Bob.

"Bob and Nancy stood out in the community," Vidor said. "They help lots of people."

The Plummers also run a diary farm, and there was a friendly bet that if Moomers won the Best Scoops contest they would name a new calf "Marysol," after GMA's own Marysol Castro.

When the Plummers found out they had won, a newborn calf — born May 21 — was indeed named "Marysol," leaving a "Good Morning America" legacy long after the ice cream melts.
