Fashion Advice for Unfashionable Fathers

"GMA" took viewers' unfashionable fathers and turned them into dapper dads.

June 14, 2008 -- "Good Morning America" asked viewers to tell us about their unfashionable fathers and why they deserved a makeover. Dozens of e-mails poured in, detailing why children thought their dads should be made a little more dapper this Father's Day weekend.

We chose three lucky fellows who work hard for their families but neglect their closets: Tim Leuzarder,Eric Greenwald and Bert Volger for a wardrobe transformation from "GMA." Micah Johnson, an editor from Details magazine, helped transform the fathers' wardrobe and offered these tips for your dad this holiday weekend.

'Date Night Dad'

For the dad that may be new to the dating game and needs a little extra help to calm "date night" jitters, Johnson offered tips on how to dress for a night on the town.

Flat-front khakis, light-colored summer sweater over a buttoned-down shirt can work at almost any restaurant.

Never wear a special "going out" shirt.

Wearing a lightweight cashmere sweater will work for almost any fancy or casual occasion.

Johnson recommends looking at shops such as Banana Republic or J.Crew for "date night" clothes.

'Office Dad'

This is the dad who has baggy suits or work clothes that are decades old. But it's never too late to look professional, and Johnson has tips for workplace fashion.

Never wear an ill-fitting suit or pleated pants.

Do wear a dark, fitted two-button suit with modern accessories.

A slim cut helps elongate the body shape.

Johnson recommends finding a modern, slim-cut suit from a store such as Emporio Armani and suggests getting it tailored.

'Retired Dad'

While this father may not be headed to work each day, Johnson says it is still important to look your best. Johnson offers a few words of advice for fathers who are done donning suits every day.

Never wear outfits older than a decade because you will never look up to date.

If you want to wear a suit, consider straight-leg denim jeans and an effortless button-down shirt with a navy blazer. It will work for this newly updated dad, day or night.

Trade in faded jeans for modern denim in a dark wash.

Johnson suggests shopping at a store such as J.Crew or Banana Republic for suitable outfits.
