Dan Harris Named Co-Anchor of Weekend 'Good Morning America'
Harris will join Bianna Golodryga as co-anchor this Saturday.
Oct. 8, 2010— -- Dan Harris has been named the co-anchor of the weekend edition of "Good Morning America," ABC News President David Westin announced today.
Harris joins co-anchor Bianna Golodryga and news anchor Ron Claiborne on the broadcast beginning this Saturday.
"In his ten years at ABC News, Dan has traveled the globe, reporting from Haiti, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Ground Zero, South Korea, Israel and the West Bank," Westin said in an e-mail announcement to the ABC News staff. "He has also distinguished the news division with thoughtful and cutting-edge coverage of faith and religion in America. Dan's a remarkably versatile journalist whose interests range from international affairs and politics to technology and indie music."
Westin said he was "delighted that Dan is joining Bianna and that these two talented reporters will lead our weekend 'GMA' team."
Harris will continue to contribute to all broadcasts and platforms as a correspondent, Westin said, and will anchor "World News" Sunday until a replacement is named.
Harris has served as the anchor of "World News Sunday" since November 2006. In addition to that role, he is a New York-based correspondent for ABC News' broadcasts and platforms, including "World News with Diane Sawyer," "Good Morning America," "Nightline," ABC News Digital and ABC News Radio.
Harris joined ABC News in March 2000, and has reported from such diverse locations as: Ground Zero, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Korea, Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. He has also spent many months in Iraq -- both before and after the U.S.-led invasion.
Most recently, he reported from Haiti on the aftermath of the earthquake. In 2009, Harris covered the Mumbai terror attacks, the cyclone in Myanmar, child slavery in Haiti and poaching of endangered animals in both Nepal and Africa.
Harris Named Weekend 'GMA' Anchor
Domestically, Harris has led ABC News' coverage of faith, with a particular focus on the evangelical movement. He scored one of the first interviews with former pastor Ted Haggard after his sex and drugs scandal.
Harris also has a longstanding interest in indie rock and has started a weekly music show, "Amplified," on ABC News NOW and ABCNews.com.
Prior to joining ABC News, Harris was an anchor at New England Cable News (NECN), the largest regional cable news network in the country, from 1997 to 2000. Before that he was an anchor and political reporter at WCSH, an NBC affiliate in Portland, Maine, for two years. He began his broadcasting career as a reporter for WLBZ, the NBC affiliate in Bangor, Maine.
Harris has been honored several times for his journalistic contributions. He received a Murrow Award for his reporting on a young Iraqi man, who received the necessary help to move to America, and in 2009 won an Emmy Award for his "Nightline" report "How to Buy a Child in Ten Hours."
A graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Harris also holds honorary doctorate degrees from Colby and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He was raised in Newton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, and currently lives in New York City.
