-- Statement from Council for Responsible Nutrition, the supplement trade group
"More than 150 million Americans take dietary supplements each year to help promote overall good health, fill nutrition gaps and help reduce the risk of some chronic diseases. The dietary supplement industry is regulated by the FDA in the areas of manufacturing, label claims, quality control and more and the FTC regulated advertising. Any claims by law must be truthful and not misleading and supported by science. There is a wide body of scientific research that demonstrates the benefits of dietary supplement products. Dietary supplements should be used as supplements to, not substitutes for, other healthy lifestyle choices. Consumers would be wise to buy from companies or sources they know and trust. If a claim sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
