Keara Bono Gets Time Off From Army Reserve After Fort Hood Shooting
Keara Bono is thankful for family and the necklace she wore that fateful day.
Nov. 26, 2009 -- Army Reserve Spc. Keara Bono says she has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
"I'm so thankful for my family, my husband," Bono told "Good Morning America" today, sitting between her husband of two months, Joe Torkelson, and her mother, Peggy McCarty.
Bono, 21, was shot twice after Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire three weeks ago in the crowded Army Readiness Center at Fort Hood in Texas.
Thirteen people died, and 34 were wounded, including Bono.
She had been scheduled for deployment to Iraq until one bullet grazed her head and another lodged in her back during the Nov. 5 shooting.
"It seemed like it would never end. It seemed like he was just firing over and over again," she said of Hasan's alleged involvement.
She displayed the T-shirt she was wearing when she was shot, adding that she believes the sentiment behind a necklace her grandmother had given her helped protect her that day.
Now, Bono, who's from Missouri, is just happy to be home with her family, enjoying a month-long leave.
And so is her family. "I'm thankful that my wife is still alive and that she can be home for a little while," Torkelson said. "We are all just happy to have her here."
She appreciates the time to heal, Bono said, but she still hopes to deploy to Iraq.
"I'm going to try," she said. "That's what I'm trying to do. I'll get re-evaluated and, hopefully, they'll let me push back up with my unit."
