Prince William and the Pauper in Pictures
Young royal poses for portrait by homeless man in bid to aid charity.
LONDON, Feb. 15, 2010 -- The lives of British royals are bound by endless etiquette, rules and duties, even to who is allowed to take their portraits. But Britain's Prince William is once again pushing the boundaries, this time having his photo taken by a homeless man in a bid to draw attention to a charity that's as close to his heart as it was to his late mother Diana's.
The young prince's photographic portrait was taken by Jeff Hubbard, a homeless man whom William also photographed. The pictures of the two men, whose lives are at opposite ends of the social spectrum, are to be shown in an upcoming London exhibit titled "A Positive View."
The images are intended as "a reminder of the way in which all of us, whatever path our lives have taken, are ultimately neighbors and share a common bond," William said.
They were taken in a London studio with the help of a professional photographer. They show the prince relaxed and smiling as he pursues his new hobby as both photographer and subject.
Hubbard said they were both nervous at the beginning. "But once the shoot started," he said, "we chatted away. I completely forgot who he was. He is a very nice guy and incredibly natural."
"The photographs show Prince William looking totally comfortable with Jeff, and it shows that he is at home with anyone. He is real prince of the people." Royal commentator Ingrid Seward told ABC News.
The two were brought together through William's work for London homeless charities. He is patron of the British charity Centrepoint, and even spent a night "sleeping rough" in December to draw attention to the plight of the teenaged homeless.
"I hope that by deepening my understanding of the issue, I can help do my bit to help the most vulnerable on our streets," the prince said at the time.
Hubbard has been the beneficiary of such help. Photography has not just become a hobby for him but also helped rescue him from a life on the streets. This model, Prince William said, will give many other homeless people new hope.
