Below is a statement from World Kitchen, the maker of Pyrex products.
• Our goal in manufacturing Pyrex glass bakeware is and always has been to make a safe product. There are hundreds of millions of pieces of Pyrex glass bakeware dishes in use, and the percentage of breakage reported in federal injury data and consumer complaints is very small; in fact, well below one percent.
• According to federal injury statistics, consumers are far more likely to be injured by dropping glass bakeware than by breakage caused by abrupt temperature changes. Tempered soda lime is, as acknowledged in the Consumer Reports article, more resistant to impact breakage.
• We believe that manufacturing a product that protects consumers from the far more likely cause of potential injury associated with glass breakage is responsible and appropriate.
• For more than 60 years Pyrex glass bakeware manufactured at the Charleroi, PA plant has been of a heat strengthened (tempered) soda lime glass composition.
• We work to provide consumers with the clearest guidance, and we update our warnings and labeling on an ongoing basis to help consumers avoid misuse. The most common causes of thermal breakage can be avoided by following four simple rules as noted on our packaging:
1. Always place hot glassware on a dry, cloth potholder or towel. Never place hot glassware on top of the stove, on a metal trivet, on a damp towel, directly on a counter or in a sink.
2. Never put glassware directly on a burner or under a broiler.
3. Always allow the oven to fully preheat before placing glassware in the oven.
4. Always cover the bottom of the dish with liquid before cooking meat or vegetables.
• Both borosilicate and tempered soda lime glass are appropriate for bakeware.
