Nicole Kidman on New Film and Being Single

N E W  Y O R K, Aug. 6, 2001 -- For the first time since their February breakup, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise will be seen together again for the premiere of their film The Others. But fans who were hoping for a reunion shouldn't hold their breath.

Their divorce becomes final this Wednesday. Ironically, the couple will see each other Tuesday, when they separately attend the Los Angeles premiere of their new film The Others. Cruise co-produced the thriller, and Kidman is the star.

In an interview with ABCNEWS' Diane Sawyer, Kidman said she would continue to privately deal with the breakup that has become so public.

"Yes, it's strange and bizarre and all of those things, but it is what it is," Kidman said on Good Morning America.

"As my dad says, 'Nic, it is what it is.' You know, it's not what it should have been, not what it could have been. It is what it is."

Children Are A Priority, Kidman Says

Kidman and Cruise, married for 10 years, decided to divorce quickly and sort out other issues such as custody of their children, money matters and property claims later. They have two adopted children: Connor, 6, and Isabella, 8.

Kidman said that above everything else, she and Cruise are parents.

"We will be the parents of two children for the rest of our lives, and that is the priority," Kidman said. "So with that comes the need to be very mature, and the need to deal with it rationally."

While Cruise and Kidman attend the same opening night party for The Others in West Hollywood Tuesday night, their divorce will become final just after midnight.

Cruise is already dating again. He's been seeing actress Penelope Cruz, his co-star in the upcoming film Vanilla Sky, which was shot late last year in New York.

His new relationship, which has made the covers of supermarket tabloids, is no secret to Kidman, but she had no interest in discussing it.

"It's not for me to talk about publicly. It's not for me to comment on publicly. It is my private life. "

The star of Moulin Rouge said that as a mother, a daughter and a sister, she has a duty not to betray herself or her family.

"You know, I'm a real person operating in the world, and for me to sit here in front of millions of people and discuss the most private thing, feels wrong," Kidman said.

Looking Ahead

Kidman will be taking some time off after the release of her new thriller. She said she is looking forward to whatever comes next in her life.

"Now I'm a person that carries everything that's happened to me, my past, with me into my future," Kidman said. "But I refuse to let it make me bitter, I still completely believe in love, and I'm open to anything that will happen to me."
