Home Design for Your Zodiac Sign

July 11, 2006 — -- Designer Nicole Facciuto and astrologer Greg Tufaro say that the zodiac can help determine how you should best decorate your room -- especially if you share a room or a home with a person of a different sign.

The two have a show on HGTV called "What's Your Sign Design" and suggest tips for making your space jive with your astrological sign and your roommate's.

Interior design and astrology go hand in hand because, as Facciuto and Tufaro say, both are about personality.

"I take what Greg says about the things that should go into the room, as in texture," Facciuto said.

The team has a simple process that it walks people through before designing a space. Tufaro asks a couple the date, time and location of their births and then does their charts.

He says the rising sign -- determined by the time you were born -- reflects the way you project yourself to others. Your ruling planet -- determined by the position of the planets at the time of your birth -- reflects your core qualities.

Based on the chart, Tufaro will determine whether someone is traditional or eclectic, playful or serious.

Facciuto will then consider ways to combine the different elements into the room.

The team designed a room using the different tastes and styles of ABC News' Diane Sawyer -- a Capricorn -- and Bill Weir -- a Sagittarius.

Capricorn is a high-achieving, yet traditional, sign, Tufaro said. Sagittarius is more eccentric and fun-loving.

They chose a sofa to represent Sawyer's love of more traditional things. To reflect Weir's more quirky nature, they picked a vibrant-yellow color.

They chose a large bookcase to represent Sawyer's love of learning and placed a Buddha on top for Weir.

"It is that mix of eclectic and traditional," Facciuto said.

Facciuto also chose a chessboard to reflect Sawyer's personality. She hung a photograph of Northern California, which represents the earthy nature of the Capricorn and the idiosyncratic Sagittarius personality with its funky colors.

Above all, the key to designing for two or more signs is finding elements of each person's personality in every piece.
