Lovers Confess to Marine Murder Plot
PHOENIX, Nov. 28, 2004 -- -- James Glass thought he was part of a happy family, until he found out that his wife -- the mother of his two daughters -- had a lover, and they were both conspiring to end his life.
Wendy Glass, of Yuma, Ariz., was sentenced to more than seven years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to have her Marine husband killed while he was stationed in Kuwait.
Prosecutors said Wendy Glass' lover, Larry Framness, tried to kill her husband with a grenade on May 14, 2003, after luring his fellow Marine to a guard shack in Kuwait.
James Glass survived the attack, which he soon learned was not the first time his life had been in danger. Authorities said Wendy Glass had attempted to kill her husband twice before the incident in Kuwait. Yet James Glass was his wife's No. 1 supporter at her sentencing earlier this week.
"I went through the wide spectrum of emotions when this happened, but I came to the realization that my two children were more important, she was a great mother for them and she needs to be a factor in their lives," he said.
'Mama Made a Mistake'
James Glass says he understands that it's difficult for others to comprehend why he would support his wife after she attempted to have him killed. But he says he feels as if it's best for his daughters to still have a mother, no matter what she has done.
"She explained to them that Mama made a mistake and she was going to have to go away to pay for those mistakes but she still loved them very much," he said.
The bizarre love triangle began in 2001, when Wendy Glass began an affair with Framness, who lived next door. The lovers exchanged lewd photographs and steamy e-mails until Framness decided he wanted even more. So he divorced his wife and begged Wendy Glass to do the same.
When James Glass refused to grant his wife a divorce, she and Framness began to work on plan B.
When Framness and James Glass were deployed to Kuwait together in 2003, prosecutors said the lovers got the idea to plan a murder that would look like a terror attack.
When their plan failed, Framness confessed and pleaded guilty in military court to attempted murder, dereliction of duty, making false official statement and adultery. He is serving a sentence of 25 years to life.
Meanwhile, Wendy Glass and Framness finally got what they both desperately wanted. James Glass has filed for a divorce.
