Katie Holmes: 'I Am Very Grateful'

Feb. 1, 2007 — -- When recounting her husband, her daughter and her career, 28-year-old actress Katie Holmes is filled with gratitude.

That's what she told Harper's Bazaar in an exclusive, first interview since her marriage to Tom Cruise.

"I have a husband and children that I adore," Holmes said in the December interview. "I have a career that I really love. When I sit back and reflect, it's -- wow. I am very grateful."

The article's photographs were styled by Victoria Beckham, Holmes' friend and the magazine's guest fashion editor, in Los Angeles. This special fashion issue of Harper's Bazaar is on newsstands Feb. 20.

Harper's Bazaar Editor in Chief Glenda Bailey came up with the idea of pairing Beckham with Holmes when the three of them dined together during fashion shows in Paris in November.

In the stylish photos that accompany the piece, Holmes comes across as strong and confident, Articles and Special Projects Director Laura Brown told "Good Morning America" today.

On the set of the photo shoot, Beckham and Holmes were like girlfriends, according to Brown. Although, on the surface, their friendship may seem unlikely, they actually have a lot in common as they are both married to icons, are young mothers, and are frequent tabloid fodder.

Beckham and Holmes were introduced to each other about a year and a half ago by their husbands.

Husband and Wife

In the interview, Holmes didn't shy away from talking about her famous husband, whom she married in a high-profile wedding on Nov. 18, 2006, in Italy.

"Tom makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world and has since the day I met him," Holmes said. "I love being with him. I love calling him 'husband.'"

"I have a whole new set of responsibilities. My work is very important to me. My family is very important to me," she said. "When I go to work, it will be the right thing, worth my time and worth my time away from my family."

Holmes, whose last movie was "Thank You for Smoking," said she would like to work with her movie-star husband.

"He's the biggest movie star ever, and he's an unbelievable actor," she said. "It would just be a real honor."

Life as a Mom

Holmes described her pregnancy as easygoing. During it, she had a craving for one thing: cupcakes.

"I felt so proud to be having a baby and so excited and I felt closer to other women -- to my sisters, to my mom," Holmes said. "I felt empowered, like, 'I've given birth. I did it. There's nothing I can't handle.'"

Her daughter, Suri Cruise, was born April 20, 2006. Holmes said she was enjoying the challenges of motherhood.

"I've really enjoyed this time that I have taken to be with Suri as well as the challenges of the first couple of months: feeding and pumping, learning to decipher what each cry means. Is she hungry? Is she tired? Does she need a fresh diaper? And figuring out how to really help her," she said.
