Nov. 23, 2008 -- "Good Morning America Weekend Edition" crisscrossed the country in search of the best slice of pie, and after nearly 30,000 votes, Norma Grubb's coconut creme pie from the Sommerset Hall Cafe in Dover, Kan., was named America's Best Slice.
Five mornings a week, Norma wakes up at 5 a.m. to bake four to seven fresh pies. They come in a multitude of flavors, depending on what she wants to make that day. Her signature pie, the coconut creme, is a perfect balance of creamy coconut and a flaky crust, topped with whipped meringue and coconut flakes.
Grubb, 88, was born in Fairview, Kan., and started making pies as a teen. Now she bakes not only for the residents of Dover, with the exception of her seven children and more than 20 grandchildren. Throughout her time at the cafe, she has made more than 8,000 pies.
