Treating Pain from Sprains and Strains

Get better fast with these steps.

July 12, 2011 — -- The PRICE method should be practiced during injuries involving sprain and strain injuries. PRICE is an acronym that stands for:

Protection

Protect the injured area of the body and do not put further pressure on it. Remove yourself from the playing field. Immobilize the injured area with a splint for example to prevent further injury. Rest

Resting the injured area is crucial for recovery

Ice

Icing helps relieve pain and limit swelling. Improper icing can lead to damaged skin. Do not apply ice directly to skin. Do not ice for longer than 20 minutes at a time.

Compression

Compressing the injured area with a bandage will often remove pain and stop swelling. Do not compress the area to tightly as this can cut off blood flow.

Elevation

Elevating the injured area above the heart will reduce blood and fluid pooling which will lessen swelling. If you follow these steps and the pain does not subside in two days, contact your physician.
