Nearly 90,000 Pounds of Meat Recalled Because of Possible Contamination
The USDA said the meat was found to have "extraneous wood materials."
— -- Nearly 90,000 pounds of beef that may have been contaminated with "extraneous wood materials" have been recalled by the Huisken Meat Company, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
According to a press release by FSIS, the company is recalling 89,568 pounds of beef after wood pieces were found in the production process.
There have been no reports of individuals becoming sick after consuming the meat, according to FSIS and the health risk for the recall was "low."
Veronika Medina, a spokeswoman for FSIS, told ABC News that the recalled products were shipped to 17 states and that the contamination was reported after small wood pieces were found.
FSIS said the contamination was caused by an ingredient added to the beef product, according to Medina. The Minnesota-based company has recalled 2-pound boxes containing six pieces of “Sam’s Choice Black Angus Beef Patties with 19% Vidalia ® Onion” with Use By dates of 05/17/2016, 05/29/2016 and 06/06/2016. These meat products were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
Calls to the Huisken Meat Company have not been immediately returned.
FSIS urges consumers who have purchased these products to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
