Dr. Morris answers the question: 'Other Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease?'
May 4, 2009 -- Question: What are some of the other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease -- other than memory loss?
Answer: Alzheimer's disease affects almost all of the mental abilities that make us uniquely human. So, it affects our personality, it affects our judgment, our reasoning. Sometimes it affects language. So, all of these, in addition to memory can deteriorate in Alzheimer's disease. Once again, it has to represent a deterioration for that individual, a change, a decline from what that person once was able to do.
But common problems in addition to forgetfulness, memory loss -- include poor judgment. This often comes up when operating appliances, having difficulty knowing how to do that, driving an automobile and trying to maintain proper household finances. All of these are problems in early-stage Alzheimer's disease.
