Do All Children With Autism Have A Seizure Disorder?
Dr. Marcie Hall answers the question: 'Autistic Children And Seizure Disorders?'
Oct. 23, 2008 -- Question: Do all children with autism have a seizure disorder?
Answer: All children with autism do not have a seizure disorder. Studies suggest approximately 25 percent of children with autism also have a seizure disorder. Many children do not develop seizures during childhood, but rather go on to develop seizures during their adolescence. And we see this increased frequency of seizure disorder in adolescents across a general population as well. And hormonal changes during puberty may be the cause for that. Children with autism as well as lower IQ or more cognitive impairment as well as other neurological conditions are at greater risk for developing a seizure disorder.
