Dr. Oaklander answers the question: 'Alternative Medicine For Shingles Pain?
-- Question: Are There Any Effective Ways To Treat Shingles Pain Using Alternative Medicine?
Answer: There are several good trials of acupuncture for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia after shingles. These universally show that acupuncture is not effective for treating postherpetic neuralgia pain.
Most alternative medicine treatments have not been tried in PHN, but there is no evidence to suggest that they work.
In contrast, there are dozens, if not more than a hundred trials showing success and safety of various conventional medications for treating shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. The important thing is not to rely on alternative medicines and to miss out on the opportunity for treatment with conventional medicines that have been proven to work for many patients.
