How Often Should Diabetics Be Screened For Diabetic Retinopathy?
Dr. Lowenstein answers the question: 'Frequency Of Diabetic Retinopathy Test?'
Aug. 24, 2009 -- Question: How often should diabetics be screened for diabetic retinopathy?
Answer: So for adults, who mostly have what we call Type 2 diabetes, screening should take place once a year. For children, most of whom have Type 1 diabetes, the screening should start somewhere around puberty because people don't usually develop retinopathy before that, and then about once a year after that. Once there are findings of retinopathy, then the examinations do have to be done more frequently.
