And the answer is that there is a detectable risk associated with consumption of alcohol. This has been shown repeatedly in different populations and (by) a number of different investigators. One of the reasons why it hasn't received a lot of public attention is that there are some cardiovascular benefits associated with moderate use of alcohol. For example, a glass of red wine a day lowers risk of heart disease. And in the scheme of things heart disease risks are much more important than cancer risks, in terms of mortality in this country.
