What Tests Can I Have Done When Pregnant?
Dr. Jennifer Harvey answers the question: 'What Tests Can I Have When Pregnant?'
-- Question: What tests can I have done if I am pregnant?
Answer: For women who are pregnant usually we would not perform screening mammograms; we would typically wait until after pregnancy and lactation to do a mammogram. If there was a reason to do a more close evaluation, for example somebody feels a lump in their breast and they're pregnant, we would usually start with ultrasound.
However, if ultrasound didn't answer the question or we really needed to do a mammogram, we can do some shielding. But mammography, because it is so low-dose in radiation, is actually quite safe in pregnancy, if we have to do it.
