Dr. Berchman Vaz answers the question: 'COX-2 Inhibitors & Osteoarthritis Pain?'
-- Question: What is a COX-2 inhibitor and how is it used to treat pain resulting from osteoarthritis?
Answer: COX-2 selective inhibitors are one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that work to decrease pain caused by osteoarthritis. They are less likely to cause stomach problems like ulcers and bleeding than the traditional NSAIDs. But they have the same risks of side effects like high blood pressure, renal problems and fluid retention. In some trials, COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
