Wife Saves Ailing Husband With ‘Match Made in Heaven’ Kidney
Wife who saved husband said ‘God wants me to be the one.’
-- A Massachusetts woman took her wedding vows of "in sickness and in health" to heart by acting as a living kidney donor for her ailing husband.
Meghan White turned out to be an even better donor match for her husband Brad White than Brad's own fraternal twin, and a transplant was performed last week, officials at Massachusetts General Hospital said.
Brad White, 34, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease last year, with no prior warning signs, according to the family’s fundraising page.
Brad White told ABC's Boston affiliate WCVB-TV that he was initially concerned about his wife undergoing the operation.
"I don’t want to see her go through that,” he told WCVB-TV. “What’s going to happen to our kids with both us out? Or god forbid if something happens.”
However, Meghan White showed no doubt about her decision, especially after she was found to be a better match than even her husband’s fraternal twin.
“God wants me to be the one, I know, I know,” she told WCVB-TV.
The couple is recovering at home, according to a statement on their fundraising site.
“My wife is still in pain but she is gutting it out like a trooper,” Brad White wrote online. “She is truly my hero. I am forever indebted.”
Dr. Persia Vagefi, the transplant surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital who worked with the couple, said doctors encourage finding a living match so that a patient doesn’t have to wait.
“It’s perfect -- a match made in heaven,” Vagefi told WCVB-TV of Meghan White’s donation to her husband.
