'Fresh Express' Lettuce Recalled Over E. Coli Strain
FDA screening finds E. coli in samples of romaine lettuce products.
July 15, 2010 -- Several romaine lettuce products with past-due use-by dates have been voluntarily recalled due to potential E. coli O157:H7 contamination after a random FDA screening found the bacteria in a sample of greens.
The contamination was found in greens from Chiquita Brands International subsidiary Fresh Express, which recalled similar products this May after Salmonella was detected in another sample of lettuce.
The company recalled all romaine-based salad products with use-by dates from July 8 to 12 with an S in the product code.
The products may not be available in stores because they are past expiration, but customers may still have the product in their homes, a prepared statement from Fresh Express said.
Customers and retailers with the expired product should discard it immediately, as with any other product past expiration, the company said in the statement.
No adverse events have been reported related to the E. coli scare, the release said.
Fresh Express is based in Salinas, Calif.
