Road Runners, ABC News Making Strides for Less Fortunate Kids With Marathon Run
Michael Capiraso ran the last 23 New York City Marathons.
-- Michael Capiraso knows a thing or two about marathons -- he's participated in the last 23 in New York in fact.
Capiraso, the president and CEO of New York Road Runners (NYRR), is hoping to go the distance for the less fortunate, running along with a team from ABC News to provide fitness programs for children who otherwise would not have access to them.
“This will be my 24th consecutive marathon,” Capiraso told ABC News' Rebecca Jarvis, who, is running this Sunday’s marathon for the first time.
Jarvis is part of the ABC Relay Team, consisting of anchors, reporters, hosts, and executives, each running approximately 1-3 miles. "Good Morning America" co-anchor Amy Robach is kicking off the relay in Staten Island and "20/20"’s Deborah Roberts rallying for the final leg through Central Park.
Both Capiraso and the ABC Relay Team will be running for “Team for Kids,” NYRR’s adult charity running team that raises funds for vital physical fitness and running programs for children who would otherwise have little to no access.
The secret to running so many consecutive marathons is not only setting a goal, according to Capiraso, but more importantly the “millions of people cheering for you on that day.”
The largest marathon in the world reaps financial rewards for New York City as well as numerous non-profit organizations.
“The economic impact to New York City is $415 million," said Capiraso. "We have tremendous involvement by a lot of businesses here in the city, the tourists that come in, the people that come from all around the world to stay here really help to fuel the economy of new York city during this time period.”
“We have a lot of charities that get involved. We have over 8000 charity runners and last year they raised over $30 million for charities.”
You too can be part of the action, the race will be broadcast live on WABC-7 in New York City and streamed live on WATCH ABC and ESPN3.
The members of the ABC relay team are: Amy Robach, Rebecca Jarvis, James Goldston, Gio Benitez, Ryan Smith, Byron Pitts, Jonathan Karl, JuJu Chang, Mara Schiavocampo, Linsey Davis, Barbara Fedida and Deborah Roberts
