Hospitals, Medical Centers Offering Meditation and More
Many medical centers are answering the call for integrative health services.
May 10, 2011 -- Health care providers are increasingly suggesting that their patients look to meditation and other integrative techniques to improve their health, according to a report released Monday by Harvard Medical School and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Many medical centers and institutions, in fact, are providing such services themselves.
The ABC News Medical Unit heard from 31 such institutions. They are listed below by state, along with some of their integrative offerings.

ARIZONA
Arizona University Medical Center, Tucson, Ariz.
Arizona University Medical Center offers Reiki for cancer patients and tai chi for stroke patients.
University of Arizona Health Science Center and the Arizona Cancer Center, Tucson, Ariz.
The Arizona Cancer Center runs a 12-week, 34-hour Mind-Body Medicine Skills Group program for patients with life-threatening and chronic illnesses.
CALIFORNIA
Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, Calif.
The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center offers yoga, meditation and other integrative medicine therapies to patients.
California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco, Calif.
California Pacific Medical Center provides guided imagery and visualization for patients preparing to undergo difficult procedures, as well as yoga, meditation, Qigong and tai chi to help patients recover from surgery.
University of California Los Angeles Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Los Angeles, Calif.
The Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center offers yoga, health education and tai chi. Additionally, the Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) offers guided meditations on its website.
University of California San Diego Health Sciences, San Diego, Calif.
UCSD provides mindfulness-based stress relief for cancer patients.
COLORADO
National Jewish Health, Denver, Colo.
National Jewish offers hypnosis and biofeedback to help those with vocal cord dysfunction, and is starting a study that looks at the effectiveness of biofeedback for asthma.
The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, Pueblo, Colo.
The Dorcy Cancer Center has been providing "healing arts" classes for cancer patients for more than four years. The center also offers yoga, tai chi, low impact aerobics and dance, art, creative movement, meditation and self-healing massage.
DELAWARE
Christiana Care Health System, New Castle, Del.
The Christiana Care Health System offers a Cancer Mind, Body and Spirit Wellness Program, as well as a prenatal yoga class.
ILLINOIS
Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
Parkinson's patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital can take advantage of music and drama therapy, as well as ballet, yoga and art classes. The hospital also provides meditation services for those with insomnia.
KANSAS
The University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan.
The University of Kansas Hospital offers yoga for atrial fibrillation patients.
KENTUCKY
Jewish Hospital Medical Center Northeast Holistic Center, Louisville, Ky.
The Jewish Hospital Medical Center Northeast Holistic Center offers a variety of mind/body and integrative treatment modalities including hypnotherapy, healing hands, aromatherapy and more.
MARYLAND
The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Center for Adolescent Health, Baltimore, Md.
The Center for Adolescent Health is conducting a pilot program using yoga to help kids deal with stress.
University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore
The University of Maryland Medical Center offers guided imagery, acupuncture, acupressure, breathing techniques, journaling, art for compassion, music and sound therapy, Reiki and yoga.
MASSACHUSETTS
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has an accredited Department of Integrative Medicine, which offers a number of complementary modalities.
MICHIGAN
Detroit Medical Center, Detroit
The Detroit Medical Center hosts workshops for people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, and more. These workshops incorporate a relaxation tape and deep breathing exercises.
MINNESOTA
Abbott Northwestern Hospital Penny George Institute for Health and Healing, Minneapolis
The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing offers a wide range of integrative medicine services, including acupuncture and oriental medicine, therapeutic yoga, energy healing, herbal consultation, mind/body therapies including biofeedback and more.
NEW YORK
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offers mind-body therapies such as meditation and self-hypnosis, as well as a wide array of fitness classes such as yoga and aerobics.
Montefiore Medical Center, New York
At the Montefiore Medical Center, patients treated for cancer are provided with alternative therapies such as aromatherapy, yoga and martial arts. The alternative therapies given to children undergoing chemotherapy and radiation are offered through the hospital's Integrative Medicine and Palliative Care Team.
New York University Cancer Institute, New York
The NYU Cancer Institute offers massage therapy for cancer patients.
New York University Hassenfeld Children's Cancer Center, New York
The Hassenfeld Children's Cancer Center offers massage therapy and Reiki for pediatric cancer patients.
New York University Fertility Center, New York
The New York University Fertility Center offers yoga classes for infertility patients.
New York University Langone Medical Center, New York
The New York University Langone Medical Center offers one-on-one meditation for inpatients and weekly mediation sessions for outpatients for all health and medical conditions.

Duke Integrative Medicine offers various techniques including yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercises.
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center offer cancer-specific yoga for cancer patients and survivors, as well as their family members and friends, at no charge. Researchers there are also conducting a pilot study on yoga for brain cancer patients, as well as a research study on yoga for women with breast cancer.
OHIO
The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio
The Christ Hospital offers a complementary medicine program to patients with cancer that includes tai chi, yoga, Reiki and healing touch.

MD Anderson Cancer Center offers more than 75 complementary therapies including art, music and humor sessions; guided imagery and stress management; yoga, tai chi and flexibility classes; aromatherapy; nutrition, diet and healthy cooking demonstrations; counseling and support groups; and journaling.
The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas
UTMB offers mind-body therapies for pain management, and it is also the home to an alternative medicine residency program.
VERMONT
