CN Tower Smoke Came From Pyrotechnics Display, Officials Say
The smoke wafting from the tower caused a scare.
-- A scare erupted Thursday evening when a pyrotechnics display went off at the landmark CN Tower in Toronto, officials said.
The display, ahead of the Pan Am Games, sent a plume of smoke wafting from the spire, which at 1,815 feet, was the world's tallest tower until 2010.
The Toronto Fire Department responded to the scene but closed out the call, spokesman Stefan Powell said.
It was not clear who set off the display, but it sparked fear among some onlookers.
In a statement, a rep for the Pan Am games said that "fireworks were set off from the CN Tower this evening as a part of the dress rehearsal for the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony."
The event was announced publicly earlier in the day.
