Guzman -- who was captured in January after six months on the run -- was transferred to the northern Mexico prison from the maximum-security Altiplano prison near Mexico City.

The United States' extradition request for Guzman was initiated just after his capture.

Alejandro Curadros, Communications Director for the National Security Commission, said today extradition is not imminent and the process is still ongoing.
