Huge Sinkhole Swallows Car and Caravan on Australian Beach
It reportedly measured nearly 10 feet deep.
-- Campers at an Australian beach got a scare Saturday evening when a giant sinkhole quickly opened, swallowing a car, a camping trailer and a caravan.
It happened at the Inskip Point campsite in the vicinity of Rainbow Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Channel 9 Australia reports. The sinkhole measured about 328 feet (100 metres) by 328 feet (100 metres) and nearly 10 feet (3 metres) deep.
About 140 people were evacuated from the site as police and emergency crews responded, reports Channel 9 Australia. There were no reported injuries or missing persons.
"Yep, can't believe we made it out," camper Melanie Wotherspoon recalled in a Facebook post. "I thought we were goners for sure, was truly scary how fast it came into our camp site and swallowed it up."
It's unclear whether the camping area was closed.
