Man Rescued 3 Days After Mudslide in China
More than 70 people were still missing today.
LONDON— -- A man was rescued today after surviving a mudslide and being stuck in the rubble for three days, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.
Firefighters had to squeeze into a narrow room around him and pull debris out, rescuer Zhang Yabin told Xinhua.
Tian Zeming, 19, was in a stable condition after undergoing surgery for a broken hand and on his foot, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
More than 70 people were still missing today after a mountain of construction waste material and mud collapsed and flowed into Hengtaiyu industrial park, in Shenzhen, southern China.
Even though the critical 72-hour period to find survivors had passed, authorities continued rescue efforts with a team of 5,000, City Vice Mayor Zhang Hu told a news conference today.
"As long as there is a sliver of hope, we will never give up," Zhang said.
Authorities identified the exact location of Tian at 1 a.m. and finally found him at 3:30 a.m. Before he was pulled out, Tian was given oxygen and received intravenous infusion, the rescuer said.
Police Tuesday reportedly raided offices of the company that they say managed the site, Shenzhen Yixianglong Investment Development. The State Council, China's cabinet, has set up an investigation team to look into the causes of the accident.
