Police Detain Suspect in Death of American Student in Rome

Massimo Galioto was "seriously implicated" in the murder, according to police.

On Monday, police recovered the body of Beau Solomon, a 19-year-old University of Wisconsin student taking courses in Rome.

John Cabot University, an English-language university in Rome where Solomon was to attend classes, confirmed the news.

John R. Phillips, the U.S. Ambassador to Italy, said in a statement today, "I was saddened to learn of the tragic death of Beau Solomon. My heart goes out to his family and friends."

Solomon was last seen early Friday morning at a pub with a group of classmates, and was expected to attend a study abroad orientation meeting on Friday morning, according to ABC affiliate WKOW-TV in Madison, Wisconsin, but never showed up.

Beau was a cancer survivor and model student who was set to graduate college in only three years, according to family.

Beau's parents left for Italy Sunday afternoon to look for their missing son, a day before the news of his death was reported.
