Police Officer in Russia Killed, Another Injured, After Gunmen Opened Fire
Unknown assailants opened fire on a police car before fleeing.
MOSCOW -- Unknown assailants opened fire on a police car on a road in Saint Petersburg, killing one officer and wounding another, Russia’s interior ministry said.
Videos of the scene published by local media outlets showed a police car ablaze in a ball of fire, with a police officer lying motionless on the road and another truck burning nearby.
The shooting took place at a crossroads in the Krasnogvardeiskii neighborhood on the city’s northeastern edge. In a statement, police said one officer had been killed on the spot and that the other was now hospitalized. The officers were members of Russia’s transport police.
The shooters fled the scene and police said a search is now underway for the suspects.
A motive for the attack has not been established.
