Police Search Home in East London Following 'Terrorist' Tube Station Stabbing
The suspect, a 29-year-old man, was arrested for attempted murder.
-- Authorities searched a residential address in East London today after a 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with a stabbing at a London tube station that is being investigating as "a terrorist incident," the Metropolitan Police said.
Police responded to reports of several stabbings at the Leytonstone Underground tube station Saturday night, where the suspect was "reportedly threatening other people with a knife," police said.
Officers were confronted by the suspect, who was armed with a knife, and when the officers tried to engage him, they "were threatened with violence," police said.
Officers discharged TASERs at the 29-year-old man, Muhaydin Mire, who was then restrained and arrested for attempted murder, police said. He remains in custody at an East London police station and is expected to make his first court appearance Monday, police said today.
The attack left a 56-year-old man in the hospital with serious knife injuries. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said police. A second man suffered minor injuries and did not require medical assistance, police said. One woman was threatened by the suspect but was not injured, said police.
The incident, described by police as a "violent unprovoked knife attack," is being treated as a "terrorist incident," Commander Richard Walton of Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command said.
"I would continue to urge the public to remain calm, but alert and vigilant," Walton said. "The threat from terrorism remains at severe, which means that a terrorist attack is highly likely."
Anyone who has video of the incident is asked to contact the police.
