Pope Francis is spending his last full day in Cuba before heading to the U.S.
— -- Pope Francis is spending his last full day in Cuba today before departing for the United States.
During his nine-day visit to Cuba and the United States, Francis will become the first pope to address the U.S. Congress. He's the third pontiff to visit Cuba in the past 17 years. He met with Fidel and Raul Castro in Havana Sunday after celebrating an outdoor Sunday Mass in the Plaza de Revolución.
His visit means much to both countries’ leaders, as Pope Francis secretly helped broker the agreement to restore diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, and advocated for the release of Alan Gross, the American who was held by the Cubans for five years before his release in 2014.
The pope wrote letters to President Obama and President Raul Castro last year urging them to start a new phase of the relationship between their two countries. The two spoke Friday before his visit.
