2016 Met Gala: Inside the Hottest Night in Fashion

— -- The steps leading to the Metropolitan Museum of Art turn into the hottest red carpet in the world each year on the first Monday of May and last night was no different.

Stars from Madonna to Taylor Swift to Beyonce, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West donned futurist and flashy looks for the theme of the 2016 Met Gala, “Manus x Machina.”

“All of my looks I've done before I've always played it safe,” Ciara, who donned an H&M dress and silver metal hair, said on the red carpet. “Tonight’s about having fun, you know, taking risks and being bold.”

“Tonight is really a celebration of New York, a celebration of fashion and everyone is here to have some fun,” Ivanka Trump told “Good Morning America" special correspondent Rachel Smith.

Uma Thurman, Karlie Kloss, Sarah Jessica Parker and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who curates the gala’s invitation list, all sported white on the red carpet.

Wintour told Smith she thought it was the color silver that would resonate in fashion from this year's gala.

Giuliana Rancic, co-host of "E!'S Live from the Red Carpet" and "E!'s Fashion Police," and Joe Zee, celebrity stylist and Yahoo! Style editor-in-chief, shared their favorite looks from the Met Gala today on "GMA."

Model Gigi Hadid and singer Zayn Malik generated 20,000 tweets per minute with their looks, which featured Hadid a metallic bodice dress and Malik with armor on his sleeves.

"I loved that they coordinated their outfits," Rancic said. “I loved everything about this. They nailed the theme of the night, man versus machine and fashion and the age of technology.”

Also stealing the show was "Homeland" star Claire Danes who wore a Zac Posen ballgown that was glow-in-the-dark thanks to a reported 30 battery packs sewn into the dress.

"This is fashion meets technology," Rancic said.

Zee added that Danes' Cinderella-style dress merged the night's two trends.

"One side of it was very traditional and classic and then the other side was really futuristic robot and Claire sort of embodied both of those trends in one dress, which is quite interesting," he said.

Rancic thought Kylie Jenner stood out in her Balmain gown, accented with "very minimal" makeup and a bob, but Zee thought Jenner's sister, Kim Kardashian West, was the greater style star at the Met.

"Kim, that custom Balmain was literally molded to her body," Zee said. "She was like sexy robot in a way ... It was really covered up for her in a way that still felt really glam."

Rancic called gala co-chair Taylor Swift's mini-dress and high boots "unexpected," while Zee raved the "Shake It Off" singer's look was "raw" and "glam."

Beyonce was the last star to show up on the red carpet and donned a latex, hand-embroidered dress and blue eyeshadow.

"We love this dress," Zee said.

Lady Gaga turned heads in what she was not wearing, pants. The singer's metallic bodysuit was another instance in which Zee says musicians stole the show Monday night.

"I think the musicians really pulled it out for this one because it's a theme that was so performance-based, I felt like they could all really do it, so Taylor, Gaga, I think they just all did it really well," Zee said.
