Artistic Mom Wins at the Lunch Bag Game
“At first they were a little embarrassed, but now they look forward to it."
-- This mom seriously knows how to spice up her kids’ lunch.
Jenn Aguilar, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has been drawing totally gnarly pictures on her two sons’ lunch bags every single day since September 2015.
“Each bag is derived from what is current or relevant in our lives,” Aguilar told ABC News of her daily inspiration. “If we've just seen a movie, watched a show or music we are listening to.”
Her sons, 14-year-old Kale and 12-year-old Konnor, love their lunchtime surprises, but that wasn’t always the case.
“At first they were a little embarrassed, but now they look forward to it and even request specific characters,” said the proud mom.
Aguilar said she used to write sweet notes to throw inside her kids’ lunch bags, but she “noticed that notes were lost and not as impactful. Putting them on the outside of the bags made it more fun,” she explained.
Now the clever mom uses a combo of Crayola Felt Markers with grease pencils to create the intricate drawings and corresponding cute taglines on the outside of the bags each day.
“I hope the boys know that I love them,” she said of why she does it. “It's my love language to relay how I feel about them.”
Although she’s a project manager now, she was previously a graphic designer, which helps her artistic abilities.
“It's an added bonus that people are enjoying my lunch bags,” said Aguilar. “This has also helped in ensuring the boys don't forget their lunch.”
