Barbie of 'Selma' Director Ava DuVernay Sells Out in One Hour
The limited-edition doll has already sold out on Amazon.
-- Filmmaker Ava DuVernay's limited-edition Barbie doll has sold out after being on sale on Amazon for just one hour.
"I was a big Barbie girl growing up," DuVernay told “Good Morning America” co-anchor Lara Spencer today. "My mother really encouraged us to expand our imagination...none of them looked like me, though."
The doll, which went on sale yesterday, is a replica of the Oscar-nominated director, complete with natural braids, a black turtleneck sweater, red sneakers. The Barbie even comes with a director's chair.
"The chair was my favorite thing because it took me a long time to earn," DuVernay said. "I wanted every girl and boy to have one."
DuVernay said she was shocked at how quickly the Barbie sold, tweeting: "Sold out on Barbie collection, I'm told. More available at Amazon. What the hell is going on? #bananas #nuts #whoa"
DuVernay said there is no word if Amazon will be manufacturing additional dolls, but she hopes hers "changes the views in what Barbie should look like."
"It was a short-time celebration, but a good thing," she said. "I'm happy with it."
