Contractor's Bathroom Transformed From an 80s Mess Into an Updated Chic Spa

— -- David Dall, a father and contractor from Connecticut, spends his life renovating other people’s homes, leaving no time to fix up his own.

“My husband is like a cobbler who has holes in his shoes,” his wife, Michelle Dall, told ABC News. “He comes home from work and wants nothing to do with the bathroom.”

Michelle said one of the family’s bathrooms is in desperate need of updating as it’s stuck in the 1980s with a broken toilet, faucet that doesn’t turn on, ugly brass counter tops and a tub jokingly described as the size of an Olympic swimming pool.

“Good Morning America” came to Michelle’s rescue with their team of renovation pros, design experts Cija Johnson and Alex Guerrero, with the help of sponsor Delta Faucet, to tackle the bathroom makeover of a lifetime.

“This is the definition of hot mess,” Johnson joked.

As Johnson and Guerrero got to work in the bathroom, ABC News' Lara Spencer headed to Dall’s workshop looking through boxes of old stuff that could help spruce up the space. A pair of 1940s sconces from David’s childhood home was found, along with a vintage car hood ornament that Spencer said can be re-purposed into a towel holder.

"Look around and use what you can," Spencer said of her design inspiration.

Spencer's re-use and recycle design approach included re-purposing a vanity chair by upholstering the back and seat of the chair with $10 worth of fabric.

"All you would need is a staple gun and it’s like wrapping a present," Spencer said of upholstering the seat. "It’s not a big deal."

Guerrero said giving your bathroom a modern, industrial look is as easy as going to your local hardware store and asking them to "thread you a piece of pipe" and attaching it to the wall.

The team's transformation of the Dall's bathroom left the couple quite pleased with the outcome.

“It’s like a waterfall just like I wanted!” Michelle excitedly said of her new Delta tub.

A new Delta H2Okinetic shower head was also installed, which uses less water and ultimately saves more money.

“As soon as everyone’s out of here, I am getting in the shower so everyone needs to get lost,” said Michelle.

Tip 1: Save money by painting the rusty mirror frame instead of buying a new one.

Tip 2: Add light under the counter to make the room pop.

Tip 3: Rescue, recycle, reinvent.

Tip 4: By downsizing the Hall’s bathroom, the room itself looks like it has doubled in size.

Tip 5: Instead of using lots of strips of tape to avoid getting spray paint on your walls, use the bubble wrap from the packaging of new fixtures you’ve purchased to cover larger spaces. That way, you won’t waste hours taping off every little corner.

Tip 6: When redoing any room in the house, mixing old with new is what makes a home meaningful. Use items that are not just bought from a store, but that tell a story, to make the space individual and special.

Tip 7: Pick a color for your bathroom that you look good in. It will make you feel happier and more relaxed while in the bathroom.
