Why This Dog Wears Bonnets Sent From All Around the World
From dog fights to pretty bows, Abigail has a purpose.
-- A dog that was missing an ear and "hours" away from death has a new lease on life -- and 70 pretty bonnets too.
Victoria Frazier, Founder of Love Is Fur Ever Dog Rescue, came across Abigail's photo on a Miami shelter's Facebook page.
"We brought her to our vet and at first didn't know what happened," Frazier told ABC News. They could see she was missing an ear and had various other injuries, but it wasn't until she was shaved for surgery they saw all the old wounds," she said. "This was not a one-time thing. It was consistent with having been used as bait in a dog fighting ring."
After her surgery, Abigail had to have her bandages changed constantly to deal with the infection where her ear once was. "One time it looked like a bow," Frazier said, and that's how Bonnets for Abigail was born.
In the month since Frazier has had Abigail, she's become a spokes animal of sorts for dogs involved in fighting.
And the world is taking notice -- Bonnets for Abigail have been sent from as far away as Russia and the U.K., totaling 70, so far, and counting.
Today, Abigail is a "bouncy, silly girl," said Frazier, who is currently fostering the dog. It's unclear what Abigail's future holds, through its certain she'll need more surgeries. Many people have asked about her. If she is adopted, the person will have to commit to a lifetime of medication for her ear, at minimum.
"She may become an ambassador for the clinic," Frazier said, "helping other dogs like her."
In fact, Abigail has already helped others. "It's amazing how one dog can make such a difference."
On Dec. 23, the rescue is holding a virtual event, asking people all over the world to wear a similar bonnet to Abigail's in an effort to bring awareness to dog fighting.
Abigail's journey is being documented on her Facebook page.
