Funny or Die Video Shows What It’s Like to Walk the Streets of NYC as a White Man
The humor site used a white man in jeans and a t-shirt to show the contrast.
-- One day after a viral video showed a woman being catcalled by men over 100 times in a span of 10 hours, the humor site Funny or Die responded with a social experiment of its own.
The website released a video Wednesday titled, "10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Man," that shows a white man walking the streets in a black crew neck t-shirt and jeans.
“Hey powerful,” says a passerby.
“Hey Harvard, Hey Harvard. You want to network with me?” asks another.
“Hey, you look really desirable but I’m going to respect your privacy,” says a third, followed at points by a stranger who continually high-fives the man and others who lift him up and carry him on a throne.
The video is, of course, a parody of the one posted Tuesday by the anti-street harassment organization Hollaback! that showed actress Shoshanna Roberts walking the streets to a chorus of “sweeties” and “Hey beautifuls.”
“It is not acceptable,” Roberts told ABC News of her experience. “Enough is enough.”
The Funny or Die video ends with a summary of how the white man in its video was treated.
“100+ instances of verbal street privilege took place within 10 hours,” the summary reads. “This doesn't include the countless Bud Light Limes, fist bumps, and small business loans that were offered.”
“If you want to help, please do nothing. Leave the patriarchy in place,” the video concludes.
The Hollaback! video, which was created as a public service announcement, has been viewed over 16 million times on YouTube.
The organization tweeted Tuesday that Roberts was receiving rape threats online and asked viewers for their help in reporting them.
