3 Hair Trends That Will Make You Do a Double Take

Jewel tones aren't just for cocktail dresses anymore.

— -- Hairstyle trends come and go quickly as the seasons change, and recently, the hottest trends for your tresses are all about color.

Here are the hottest new hair color trends that are popping up around the country.

1. Jewel Tone Hair

According to Jason Backe, the master colorist and co-owner of Ted Gibson Beauty in New York City, the pastel hair trend that made waves earlier this year is on its way out, and taking its place are brighter and bolder colors, from electric blues to fire-engine reds and flaming orange shades.

"Jewel tones can be a little more sophisticated and modern looking if you’re going for a bold color," said Backe.

Back explained that these jewel tone and rainbow hair coloring trends are part of a statement look that men and women are making.

"People today are saying, 'My hair color isn’t accidental. It makes me feel amazing,'" said Backe.

2. "Chocolate Chip Cookie" Hair

This hot new hair trend is as sweet as its name suggests. The "chocolate chip cookie" hair color combines shades of blond and brown highlights to create the mesmerizing color.

Hairstylist Ryan Pearl, who created the formula for the "chocolate chip cookie" technique, said that he's been contacted by multiple models requesting the new hair color craze.

"I wanted to come up with a seamless low-maintenance look for my clients that still enjoy a polished look," Pearl said.

"I simply came up with the name because I was doing my girlfriend Lisa Marlier from Ford Modeling Agency's [hair] color, and the tones we agreed on make up the colors of a chocolate chip cookie," he said.

Pearl said the "chocolate chip cookie" hair color "can be done on anyone."

3. Dip-Dye Hair

For those who are not fully committed to dyeing their entire heads but still want a pop of color in their locks, try the "dip-dye" trend, which, as the name suggests, makes it look as if you've dipped part of your hair into a colorful hair dye.

Backe said the dip-dye hair trend is a throwback to the eighties, and referenced singer Terri Nunn from the band Berlin as an example of the hairstyle's past popularity.

"It wouldn’t be surprising to me if that variation of a dip-dye comes back," Backe said.
