#RKOI: ‘Rich Kids of Instagram’ Documentary Shows Lavish Lives of Wealthy Youth
The super-rich are profiled in a new documentary by Osca Humphreys.
-- As the saying goes, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it.” And the so-called rich kids of the popular "Rich Kids of Instagram" account want the world to know they’ve definitely got it.
They spend thousands of dollars a month on shopping sprees and get Botox in their teenage years. And they post numerous photos of their extravagant lifestyles, where nearly 200,000 Instagram followers can take a peek at their wads of cash, private jets, super cars, yacht parties, Parisian hotel suites and exotic vacation locales.
Osca Humphreys made a documentary about the phenomenon. He said some of the super-rich profiled in his documentary, “Rich Kids of Instagram,” would post up to 30 photos a day to Instagram.
“We wanted to find out what it was that was driving them to do this,” Humphreys told ABC News.
Humphreys said people questioned why he made the documentary, which aired Monday night on British television.
“There’s a fascination of what goes on in the worlds of the top one percent," Humphreys said. "Instagram is kind of like a portal into people’s lives.”
Some of the “rich kids” now have hundreds of thousands of online followers.
“When you get a lot of attention it can be intoxicating,” Humphreys said.
Jill Spivack, a psychotherapist and co-founder of Sleepy Planet Parenting, says the material wealth the "rich kids" display on social media may have a negative impact on their followers.
“They’re showing a very extreme version of their lives,” Spivack told ABC News. “For children that are impressionable, it is kind of information coming at them constantly [that] can lead to an increase risk of depression and loneliness.”
