Rooftop pool hangs 500 feet above downtown Houston
Market Square Tower's rooftop pool boasts breathtaking views.
-- Many hotels and high-rises feature rooftop pools -- but few of them offer the view seen from Market Square Tower in Houston, Texas.
This pool has an 8-foot portion that projects 500 feet above downtown Houston, making for breathtaking views. A stunning video posted last week to the complex's Instagram page has garnered more than 20,000 views.
The glass extension portion of the pool is made from 5-and-a-half-inch-thick clear acrylic plastic, according to Trevor Thompson, a PR representative for the complex, and it is the tallest clear, cantilevered pool in the country.
It was engineered by Walter P. Moore, an international firm founded in 1931. The firm worked with Reynolds Polymer, which specializes in designing aquariums, to achieve the unique pool.
The pool -- which was built to withstand hurricane conditions -- contains 33,000 gallons of water. It is 4 feet deep and weighs 250 pounds per square foot. The pool isn't the only amenity this 463-unit luxury complex boasts -- it also features a rooftop sky lounge, a movie theater, a ballroom and spa.
